Peg was born on June 12, 1933 to Alice and Stephen Hughes of Bear River, PEI. She was one of 12 siblings in a tight-knit family that remained very close throughout their lives. After moving to Charlottetown to attend high school, she stayed to work and eventually met and married her first husband Jim Pitre in 1956, and they raised a family of five children together. In 1962 Peg and Jim built a new home where they met lifelong friends and neighbours and welcomed extended family during their time there. They also enjoyed many good times at their cottage in Canoe Cove before Jim passed away in 1990. In 1994 Peg married Phil Coker, and they had 17 years together where they continued to live an active life of visiting family, cottage in the summer, camping, dances and time with grandchildren. Peg was a big fan of live music and would often be the first at a family gathering to ask if anyone had a guitar, even buying a guitar to have at her apartment in later years in case anyone wanted to play it. She was a talented seamstress and whether she was making clothes for her children at the kitchen table in her “spare time” or mending for friends and family, she had a way of making people feel cared for, comforted and welcomed in her home that is a common thread today in reminiscences of her.
