Arlene Mamye (Smallwood) slipped away peacefully January 21, 2026 at the QEH in Charlottetown.
Arlene is survived by her daughters and son, Tanya O’Brien (John), Charles (Jessica O’Leary) and Anne (Chris Lund). Arlene will be dearly missed by her grandchildren who she has spoiled with love, Katie Waite (Logan), Hannah O’Brien (Nolan Healy), Alex O’Brien, and Emily, Jena and Dryden Mamye. And her very special great grandson, Owen, who was welcomed into this world in the past few months to bring joy to us all.
Arlene also leaves behind her brothers and sisters, Teddy Smallwood, Marjorie Gyurus (Jim – deceased), Henry Smallwood (Nancy), David Smallwood (Judy), and Jimmy Smallwood (Diane).
Arlene was predeceased by her husband, Charlie, her parents Sheldon and Annie Smallwood, her brothers Ralph and Joe and sisters Shirley Hughes (Billy), Janet Phalen (Billy) and Dianne Smallwood.
Arlene was born in Southport in 1940 and spent her formative years there growing up on the family farm with her 10 siblings. She went to Notre Dame Convent for high school and to the Charlottetown School of Nursing (Class of ’61) where her classmates became her life long friends. Arlene was a nurse by profession and by nature, caring for others her entire life.
Family was most important to Arlene, or Nanny as she was adoringly called by her family. Her grandchildren and great grandchild brought her so much joy, in the early days spending hours with them playing and baking (especially whoopie pies) and in later years just catching up with their lives. She always looked forward to spending time with them.
In appreciation for a life well lived, donations to the Provincial Palliative Care Centre in Charlottetown would be appreciated. Our heartfelt thanks to the staff in unit 2 and Doctor Lecours and Sharon Ruckley from the Palliative Care team at the QEH.
Resting at Belvedere Funeral Home where a visitation will be held on Sunday, January 25th from 2 to 5 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Assumption Parish in Stratford. The funeral mass that had been planned for Tuesday has now been postponed to Thursday, January 29 at 1:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Parish in Stratford.
To live in the hearts of those we love, is not to die.
