With profound sadness, we say goodbye to Brian Hughes (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island). Brian passed away September 10th in his 88th year at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) surrounded by his family. Beloved and devoted husband of Penny D (predeceased, nee Fisk). Loving father to Beverly Naylor (Dan), Amy, and Owen (Penny A). Survived by his brother David Hughes (Barbara), sister-in-law Judith (Fisk) Beauchamp, brothers in law David Fisk (Christine), Ron Fisk (Cecile Brasseur), Barry Loadenthal (Nancy, predeceased), friend Ruth Neil, and his 7 grandchildren: Sarah Hughes, Kay Naylor, Duncan Hughes, Ian Hughes, Casey Naylor, Emma Hughes-Gould, and Caitlyn Hughes.
Brian was born in Stockport England to Harry Hughes (predeceased) and Sarah (predeceased, nee Austin). Brian is predeceased by wife Penny D, brother-in-law Jim Beauchamp, sister-in-law Nancy Loadenthal, and special friend Gertrude Rowsell.
After serving with the Royal Air Force in Cyprus and North Africa, Brian immigrated to Canada in 1965, where he met his loving wife of 35 years in Granby Quebec. Brian had a long career in mechanical and lighting design. His career took him and Penny D to Ayr Ontario where they raised their family and attended Christ Church (Anglican) and Knox United Church. Brian was active in his community playing tuba in the Ayr Paris Band and as a member of the Kinsmen supporting local initiatives. His love of reading was transferred to his children through regular outings to the Ayr Public Library. Later they moved to Dundas where Philpott Church, Hamilton, became their home church. Brian and Penny chose to retire in Charlottetown in 2003 where they attended First Baptist Church and Saint Peter’s Cathedral.
Beverly, Amy, and Owen are grateful for the caring and compassionate medical care provided by the medical team at QEH since 2003. A special thank you to Dr. O’Connor.
Cremation has occurred and a memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Lung Association.
