Catherine (Katy) Thorburn Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother, Catherine (Katy) Thorburn, age 77 of Shelburne, Nova Scotia on April 5th, 2026 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown, PEI.


Catherine is survived by her loving companion Michael Swim, daughter Susan Thorburn (Cory Davis), son Darren Nickerson (Kelsey Butler), grandchildren Tyler (Heather) Butler, Johnny Butler (Sophie Goulden), Cody Scott (Aurora Nickerson), Ella, Kyleigh, Lincoln, and Everleigh Nickerson, great-grandchildren Callie and Grant Butler, stepson M. Douglas (Mandy) Swim, step-grandchildren Shelby, Lexie, and Emma Swim, and step-great-grandchild Zoe Swim.


Predeceased by her husband Harry (Bub) Thorburn, son Johnny Thorburn, and daughter Debra Nickerson (husband Darren Nickerson).


Katy faced personal challenges with quiet strength and courage throughout her life.


She was a kind and gentle soul, with a deep love for music and her cat, Sooky, who brought her comfort and joy.


Katy was deeply compassionate and empathetic, with a generous heart that touched the lives of everyone. She will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and genuine nature.


For 18 years she enjoyed the companionship of many homestay students.


Many thanks to all the caregivers, doctors, and nurses at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.


Resting at Belvedere Funeral Home. In accordance with Katy’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. The family will hold a private ceremony at a later date.
