Damien (Dan) Sampson Obituary

Monday, March 11th marked a moment of both deep sorrow and serenity as the world said farewell to a truly remarkable soul, Damien "Dan" Kiely Sampson. Surrounded by his loving family, Dan's final moments were illuminated by a gentle sunlight, symbolizing the peaceful transition from his earthly struggles to a place of eternal rest and a long awaited freedom.

Born into the welcoming arms of Louis Bernard Sampson and Marie Maude (Marchand) in St. Peters, Cape Breton, Dan was the cherished youngest sibling to Lou Sampson (and the late Shirley), Jane MacCormac (and the late Bucky), the late Gary Sampson (Barb), Joseph Sampson (Lane), and Sheila Stapleton (Steve). His early years, split between the modest communities of St. Peter’s, Cape Breton and Amherst, Nova Scotia, laid the foundation for a life characterized by hard work, warmth, generosity, and an ever-present smile.

In 1966, the Sampson family relocated to Fort Erie, Ontario, a period during which Dan's innate kindness and sociability blossomed, earning him deep rooted and lifelong friendships that would endure the test of time and distance. Yet, the call of the east coast proved irresistible, and Dan eventually returned to Cape Breton, where he established his home in Dundee. Here, against the backdrop of the serene Bras d'Or Lake, he and his wife Holly (MacIntosh) nurtured their greatest treasures, their sons Brennen and Dane, in a home filled with love, laughter, and countless memories.

The early 2000s saw Dan embark on a new chapter of his life in Prince Edward Island, drawing him closer to his siblings and an extended family of nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews, all of whom loved and adored their "Uncle Dan." His years in PEI were rich with celebration, from festive family gatherings to quiet moments of connection in the idyllic cottage setting of Stanley Bridge.

Dan's later years were marked by a valiant struggle with COPD, a battle he fought with courage and grace until his peaceful passing granted him release from the physical constraints that had challenged him. In these moments, Dan was a beacon of strength, his spirit unbroken, his heart full of love for his boys, his family that were gathered with him, and the beautiful moments of a wonderful life.

Left to honor and remember Dan are his sons, Brennen and Dane; his three beloved grandchildren, Braiden, Piper, and Damien; his siblings and their families; his Aunt Leona Middleton of Three Island Cove, all his "Caper" cousins; and a global circle of friends whose lives were touched by his kindness, humor, and generosity.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated team of healthcare professionals at QEH ICU and Unit 8 for their compassionate care, and to the MAiD Team of Doctors and associates for their support and guidance during Dan's final journey.

As we bid goodbye to Dan, let us celebrate the wonderful legacy of a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and left this world a better place with his presence in it. His memory will forever be a beacon of light for those fortunate enough to have known, loved and been loved by him. Rest easy now, dear Dan. You have earned it. Your story will continue in the hearts and minds of all those you've touched.
