It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David Baxter McKay (Skipper), aged 71, who departed this life unexpectedly on September 18, 2025, surrounded by his loving wife and close friends.
Born on June 30, 1954 in Deer Lake, Newfoundland, David was the beloved son of the late Maisie and Baxter McKay.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, David’s life was marked by integrity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved.
David spent over 29 years working for Syncrude Canada, retiring in 2009.
He was known not only for his expertise as a Heavy Equipment Operator but also for mentoring younger employees and fostering a friendly workplace.
He served as a quiet leader, always offering a listening ear and practical wisdom.
He married the love and life soul partner, Pamela, in 1992. Together, they built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and unconditional love.
David was a proud father to Sheldon, and a doting grandfather to Alisha (Jordon), Lexi, Lincoln, Lillian, Remy, and great grandfather to Travis, Kiersten, Dominic, Callie.
Also leaving behind brother Shawn (Sandra) and close extended family and friends.
David had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and spent many weekends camping, fishing, jogging, marathon running and working in his wood studio.
He also had a love for classic Saturday Night Hoe Down, UFC, playing cards, and morning coffee or tea on the waterfront deck watching the local maritime wild life.
David’s calm presence, generous heart, and quick witted humor touched all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humility, and quiet strength.
He is survived by his wife, son, grandchildren, great grandchildren, brother, Brother-in-law Malcolm Oxford and Godchildren Kayla and Lynsey Bent.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Linda Oxford, grandparents Burt and Lillian Cull, Pierce and Rebecca McKay.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at Belvedere Funeral Home (Reception Entrance), (175 Belvedere Avenue, Charlottetown, PEI) for a dedication on the life of David, reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in David’s memory to the PEI Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
