In his home, Dr. Charles Edward Johnston of Cornwall, PEI, passed away at the age of 83 years on March 11, 2025.
Ed grew up in Cornwall, Ontario and was a curious and adventurous child. He would often take his toys apart to see how they worked. He arrived home one day with a couple of turkeys under his arm that he wanted to raise, much to his mother’s chagrin. Ed’s curiosity about nature led him to a career as Biology professor at UPEI. As he would whip through numerous overheads in record speed during his lectures, he was fondly known as “Overhead Ed”. Those who passed his courses have remarked that he was a tough, but fair professor.
Ed met his wife Marcia while studying at UNB and moved to Cornwall, PEI to raise their family. They were married for 60 years, until Marcia’s death in January 2025. Together, they enjoyed gardening and their grandchildren. Ed’s pastime was going to the racetrack to bet on the ponies. When he won, he enjoyed pulling out his wallet to show off his hundred dollar bills, or as he liked to call them, “his brown ones”.
Father to Heather (Ted), Andrew (Nancy) and Melanie (Paul). Grandfather to Emma (JD and Eli), Maddie, Hunter, Brooke, and Evan. Remembered by his sister Margo, brother Herb, and their families.
