Dr. Cirill Schmidt Obituary

Dr. Cirill Schmidt, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, professor, and research scientist, passed away on October 24th, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, adventure, and dedication to both his family and his life's work. He is survived by his cherished wife, Edith, his daughters Katalin and Zsazsa, his son Anthony (Tony), and his beloved grandchildren, Liv and Seb.

Cirill's extraordinary life was marked by resilience and a sense of adventure. Born in Hungary, he and Edith bravely escaped during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, embarking on a journey that took them from Montreal to Fredericton and Cambridge, Massachusetts, before finally settling in their beloved Prince Edward Island, where their son Anthony was born.

In many ways, Cirill's greatest accomplishment was his loving and close relationship with Edith. Their bond, built over 68 years together, was marked by deep love and care for one another. Edith's unwavering devotion to Cirill during his final two years, as he became frail, was both touching and impressive.

As a dedicated chemistry professor and research scientist, Dr. Schmidt was known for his sharp intellect and unquenchable curiosity. His passion for discovery and learning left a lasting impact on many colleagues and students.  He was also known for his love of science textbooks, which he often enjoyed as light reading, his expansive knowledge of languages, his appreciation for good food and wine, and his fondness for his Westphalia camper, a subject he frequently reminisced about in his later years.

The family would like to express their deep thanks and appreciation to the healthcare workers and home care workers of Prince Edward Island, whose compassionate care went above and beyond. Their dedication allowed Cirill to experience an end of life that honored the rich, full life he lived.

A Celebration of Life will be held in his honour at the Belvedere Funeral Home reception centre on Wednesday, October 30th, 2024 at 11 a.m. till 1 p.m., where family, friends, and colleagues will gather to remember and celebrate a life lived to the fullest.

Cirill’s family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Upper Room Food Bank and Soup Kitchen in Charlottetown.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
