Gerald Patrick Murphy Obituary

Gerald Patrick Murphy of Oyster Bed Bridge, Prince Edward Island, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2026. Born June 26, 1956, in Holyrood, Newfoundland and Labrador, he was the beloved son of Angela and John Murphy. Gerry lived a life marked by kindness, resilience, quiet humour, and unwavering devotion to his family, friends, and community. In recent years, he faced significant health challenges with remarkable courage and grace, always ready with a smile and a warm conversation, even on his most difficult days.

A proud alumni soccer player and graduate of the University of New Brunswick, Gerry later earned his Master’s in Guidance Counselling and dedicated his career to supporting youth. He made a lasting impact on students in Churchill Falls and Fort McMurray, spending 19 years with the Fort McMurray Catholic School Division before retiring in 2010. He was known for his steady presence, thoughtful guidance, and genuine compassion.

Gerry had a lifelong passion for sport. An accomplished badminton player, avid skier, and dedicated volleyball coach, he was also a devoted supporter of Manchester United F.C. and Raiders football, rarely missing a match. He especially enjoyed watching games with friends at the Blackhorse, where the camaraderie meant as much as the competition. Gerry also proudly served as an auxiliary police officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, a role he found deeply rewarding.

Gerry and Golda built a wonderful life together in Fort McMurray before returning to Prince Edward Island in retirement. They embraced time as snowbirds and travelled often, particularly to Portugal, a place Gerry dearly loved. Though based on the East Coast, they frequently returned west to spend cherished time with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Gerry took great pride in mentoring his granddaughters into careers in human services and was especially proud of his daughter Lindsey, whom he lovingly called his “mini-me,” admiring her strength, her care-taking nature, and her dedication to sharing Newfoundland culture and heritage.

Family was at the heart of Gerry’s life. He shared a special bond with his extended family, the Henstridges, and treasured the friendships he built in Wheatley River, where he was fondly known as “the mayor.” He had a rare gift for connection — striking up conversations anywhere and making people feel truly seen and valued. His warmth, attentive listening, and gentle spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Gerry is survived by his devoted wife of 32 years, Golda; his daughter, Lindsey Murphy; his stepchildren, Tonya Fox (Russell) and Jamie Fox (Danette); his grandchildren, Hannah (Kyle), Kelti (Max), Jaxon, and Ryder; and his great-grandchildren, Lincoln and Lily Scott. He is also lovingly remembered by his siblings, Betsy McGlashan (Brian), Sally Turcotte (Michael), Catherine “Kitty” Murphy (Charles), Peggy Brown (Ted), Michael Murphy (Kim), and Paul Murphy, along with his cherished nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Angela and John Murphy, and by his siblings Kevin Murphy, John Murphy, and Helen Murphy.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a cancer charity in Gerry’s memory.

Though deeply missed, Gerry’s love, courage, and gentle spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him.
