James (Ralph) Willard Martin

June 5, 1956 ~ May 21, 2023 (age 66) 66 Years Old

Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of James “Ralph” Willard Martin which occurred at his residence on Sunday May 21st, 2023. He is survived by Chantal Cahill, his loving spouse of 28 years. Ralph is also survived by his sons Kyle Martin (Sarah), and Jamie Martin (Mara), grandchildren Ison and McKenley, and his canine companion Remington. Born in Ottawa, ON on June 5, 1956, he was the son of the late James Ralph William Martin and Frances Ann (DesRoches) Martin. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Wayne Martin.

Although being born in Ottawa he spent his adolescence on and around Air Force bases with his parents and brother. After high school, Ralph began working for CN Telecommunications which led him to work at the CN Tower during the beginning phases of its construction. If there was one place Ralph called home it was the small mining town of Red Lake, Ontario. After following a friend to find work, he began working in the mines which laid the foundation for years to come.

Ralph worked in the mining industry for the next 30 years of his life, but it could be said his passion was his efforts with Ontario Mine Rescue. Outside of work, he enjoyed being on the lake, waterskiing at Sandy Point, camping at Slate Bay, and solving all of the world’s problems over coffee with friends. Later retiring from the mine Ralph and family moved to Prince Edward Island where he pursued further education, graduating from the Construction Technology and Management program at Holland College. Not everyone got to see all the sides of Ralph, but by many he will be remembered for his remarkable stories, witty comebacks, and infectious laughter.

Resting at Belvedere Funeral Home, with visitation on Thursday, May 25 from 4 to 7 p.m. Internment will take place in Nova Scotia at a later date. Donations in memory of Ralph may be made to the Canadian Lung Association. We encourage people who knew him to share any stories or memories on his obituary page.
