Jane Walker Obituary

Jane Walker was born, raised and schooled in Edinburgh, Scotland along with her elder brother Kim and sister Sally.

As a child during the war, she was temporarily evacuated to stay with grandparents in Aberdeenshire with her sister, whilst her brother went to their other (stricter!) grandparents.

Following school she attempted several professions before deciding to train as a nanny, which was to become her lifelong career.

Without marrying nor having children of her own, Jane surrounded herself with large and loving families throughout her working life.

Whilst she easily fitted in, she was never part of the herd - always remaining fiercely independent and true to her own character - a feisty mix of a wry sense of humour together with strong moral values.

She embodied Scottish Presbyterianism, stoic, understated but intelligent, witty and often forthright in her opinions and beliefs, but without imposing them on others nor sermonizing.

As an ex-pat Scot in Canada for the majority of her life, she remained deeply attached to her Scottish roots, annually returning to visit her mother Peg and brother Kim and his family in Edinburgh and keeping in touch with friends from school days.

Initially working for a family that first moved to Kenya then later to Toronto, Jane went with them. She spent the remainder of her adult life in Canada, following another family when they also relocated and ultimately settled in Charlottetown, PEI, where she stayed. Here Jane readily embraced her adopted nation and was proud to gain Canadian citizenship in later years.

Jane regularly attended church, folding service sheets and on occasion reading lessons and helping out in many other valuable ways and in the process made many friends. She also enthusiastically supported the Caledonian Society, making any excuse to don some tartan in order to attend Scottish music and poetry events from ceilidhs to Highland Games. She proudly adorned each of her successive cars during her years in Canada with a front license plate of the Saltire, the national flag of Scotland and a sign in the rear window that read “Thank God I’m Scottish!”

She was loyal to her ‘employers’ who in many cases became lifelong friends. It is testimony to this loyalty to friends, families and community that she was surrounded by people throughout her life.

Her regular contact with her sister Sally and her family - who also emigrated to Canada’s Vancouver Island, was maintained throughout her life, increasingly latterly which was a source of comfort and companionship to both, as was the generosity shown towards her nieces and nephews at birthdays and Christmas time.

As one of her former charges put it - Jane was a loving and attentive daughter, friend, Aunt, Sister, neighbor, nanny, babysitter, honorary grandmother, and favourite Scot!

She always held an active interest in the various goings-on of her family, friends and their families and will be missed and fondly remembered by those who journeyed with her at various stages of her life.

Rest in peace Jane Elisabeth Walker.
