Jean G Wright

Jean Wright, age 77, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 14, 2025, with family by her side.

Jean is survived by her sister, Sharon Boothroyd, of Ottawa, ON; niece Sherry Oake and her husband, Robert Oake, also of Ottawa, ON, and nephew Geoffrey Boothroyd and his wife Miriam McCann of Peterborough, Ontario. Loving grandnieces and nephews are Christopher Oake, Eva Oake, Elizabeth Oake, Claire Boothroyd and Caitlyn Boothroyd.

As the owner of Wright’s Shoe Store in Charlottetown, Jean was well known. The store catered to high quality women’s footwear. Her store on Queen Street was a beehive of activity for forty seven years. Jean inherited the business from her father, Arthur L. Wright, in 1973, at the age of 25. It had begun in the depression era, in 1931, opened by her grandfather, Austin L. Wright. Three generations in a family business is a remarkable achievement. It lasted 89 years, half of those under Jean’s care.

As a young single woman owning a business, she paved a path at a time when few woman owned businesses. She carved a niche for Wright’s, building a clientele in PEI, Canada and the US. Her highly developed web presence sent her shoes to thousands of people.

Jean travelled for business purposes as well for pleasure. The south called, especially in November and February. Panama became a favorite local in later years.

At home Jean enjoyed her dogs. Cocker Spaniel were her favorite breed and she had four pairs overtime. Customers were enthralled to say hello to the dogs. She was all smiles on PEI’s beaches and trails as she walked with them.

The family would like to express their thanks to Garden Home and Atlantic Baptist Nursing Home for the past two years of care. We also thank Melody Gay who gave Jean special attention during her time in care.

A private family memorial service will be here at a later date in Sherwood Cemetery.
