The death occurred peacefully at the Provincial Palliative Care Centre on December 1, 2025, of Joseph “Walter” James MacKinnon, aged 77. Beloved husband of 55 years to Sharon (nee Rogers) and dear father to sons, Roger (Lizzy), Kenneth (Sarah) and daughter, Lisa, loving Papa to Laurel and Clara. Predeceased by his brother Norbert. Survived by his brother Gerard (Susan).


Walter was born in Souris, PEI, to the late William Angus and Frances (nee Campbell). A graduate of Saint Malachys High school in Saint John, New Brunswick, he went onto obtain his Chartered Accountant designation, in 1974, with Clarkson Gordon in Toronto. He returned to Charlottetown in 1975 to work with R D Manning & Co., which later merged with Coopers & Lybrand. Walter became a partner with Coopers & Lybrand and continued his education by becoming a Licensed Insolvency Trustee in 1985. He was in charge of the insolvency practice in the Coopers & Lybrand Charlottetown Office until 1997 when he formed his insolvency firm as J. Walter MacKinnon Ltd. In 2007, he would move on to work for PwC for five years and retire in 2012. After being retired for four years, he returned to work with MNP Ltd, in their Charlottetown office in 2016, where he was in charge of their PEI Insolvency Practice. He retired from MNP in May 2024.


He gave generously of his time to the community, his profession, and his church. He was a board member and chairman of Queens County Residential Services. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts of Canada managing the canteen services and the disposal sale for the national jamboree held in PEI. He served on the United Way of PEI. He also served on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital equipment campaign. He served as a board member and president of the PEI Institute of Chartered Accountants. He was a member of the building committee for Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Cornwall. He was also a member of the Rotary Club of Charlottetown Royalty for 25 years serving for a time as the Club’s treasurer and as the Rotary district treasurer. He also was a member of the finance committee for the Diocese of PEI.


A life well lived, he will be missed. Resting at Belvedere Funeral Home with visiting hours from 1pm to 4pm on Sunday, December 7, 2025. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 8, 2025, at 10am from Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Cornwall, PEI. Memorials in memory of Walter may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
