Kenneth MacKenzie Obituary

Kenneth Hunter MacKenzie was born on 18 June 1929 in Moncton New Brunswick to Leroy and Bella (nee Hunter) MacKenzie. He was the fourth of 5 children, the third boy and was predeceased by all. He is survived by his wife Florence (nee Saville) and his two daughters Dawn Knudson (Eric) and Susan Howard (Greg) and his grandchildren Melanie Bailey, Carolyn Lowe, Nicholas Howard and William Howard; great grandchildren Samuel and Micah Bailey, Allison Poole as well as Florence’s children Jillian and Jeff, and grandchildren fondly remembered as Poppy Ken by Tate, Callen and Reed Smith, Julia and Jack MacMillan.

Ken started work in the late 1940s with Sumner Company of Moncton while attending Commercial College in the evenings. In 1950 while at college he was offered a post with Canadian Oil Company (White Rose). In that year he married Phyllis Duff of Moncton. In 1958, Ken was transferred to PEI where he was the marketing representative on the Island for White Rose. After Shell took over Canadian Oil, he was transferred back to Moncton as the marketing representative for the Southeast Shore area of New Brunswick. Just three years later Ken returned to the Island to develop and expand the Shell brand. The family developed many close friends where they participated in the life of the First Baptist church community in Charlottetown and spent many enjoyable hours at their cottage on the Lower Montague River. He also pursued studies in Accounting at UPEI. Upon retirement from Shell in 1985, not one to sit idle, Ken commenced employment with the PEI Government in the Department of Agriculture where he worked for 4 years as the Potato Marketing representative until finally retiring in 1989. He cultivated many hobbies in retirement, gardening, photography, woodworking, and fishing with his brother Reg at Adair’s Wilderness Lodge in New Brunswick, where he would visit every year until the last year of his life. In 2004 Ken married Florence (Saville) MacMillan and they enjoyed many years of travel while living in Bunbury before Ken settled into the hobbies he enjoyed until his death, reading mysteries and playing crib and poker with a regular group of friends at the Habbi Apartments on North River Road where he and Florence lived for the past 12 years.

Resting at Belvedere Funeral Home, from where his funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at 2 p.m. Visitation will be held for one hour prior. Interment will follow in Sherwood Cemetery. Donations in memory of Ken may be made to the First Baptist Church or the Salvation Army.
