With sadness, the family announces the peaceful passing of Margaret June Gallant, affectionately known as Peg or Peggy, on November 8, 2025, at the Provincial Palliative Care Centre in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
Born in Victoria-by-the-Sea, PEI, on June 3, 1930, Peg was the eldest and beloved daughter of the late Amy and Leroy Howatt. She spent her early years at her cherished family home, The Anchorage, in Crapaud, and on her grandparents’ farm in Westmoreland, where she built a life deeply rooted in love, community, and family. She carried the strength and sense of responsibility that so often belong to the oldest child and held a special place in the hearts of those who grew up alongside her.
Peg was predeceased by her husband, Roy Gallant, with whom she shared many years of steady companionship and a life built on hard work, mutual respect, and quiet devotion. In later years, she found heartfelt companionship again with her partner, Ralph Lowther, whose presence brought her comfort, laughter, and renewed joy.
She will be dearly missed by her children Mary Beth (Joseph) Amelia, Ruth Anne Bushey, Dale Lowther, and Paul (Paula) Lowther, and was predeceased by Amy Lowther. She was blessed with grandchildren Karen, Mike, Lee, Dean, Renée, Josh, Jessica, James, Lucas, and Adam, and several great-grandchildren. Peg treasured the family ties and connections she built through these relationships.
Peg is lovingly remembered by her sister Joan MacPhail, who holds many decades of shared memories close to her heart, and by her sister-in-law Nancy Howatt. She was predeceased by her siblings Miriam Harvey (Lyman), Doug Howatt (Mary), Allison Howatt, and brother-in-law Doug MacPhail. Peg will also be fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews in the Howatt, Gallant, and Lowther families, all of whom cherished her warmth, generosity, and kindness.
Peg’s life was marked by dedication, energy, and quiet strength. She began her career as a teacher before moving into business, where she built a respected career as a supervisor at Zellers department store. A natural leader, Peg was admired for her strong work ethic, gracious manner, and unwavering sense of purpose.
An active and social woman, Peg approached life with vitality and grace. She took great pleasure in lawn bowling, dancing, playing cards, and bocce ball, and was particularly accomplished in the sport of curling. As a member of the Crapaud Curling Club, she valued both the camaraderie and the spirit of sportsmanship that accompanied the game.
She and Ralph spent many wonderful winters in Madeira Beach, Florida, where they developed a close-knit circle of friends from across Canada and the United States. Peg cherished these friendships deeply and often spoke of the laughter and memories they shared in Bay Pines.
Peg was a lifelong member of St. John’s Anglican Church, Crapaud, where she grew up listening to her dear mother, Amy, play the organ for many decades. A funeral service celebrating Peg’s life will be held at St. John’s Anglican Church on Friday, November 14, 2025 at 11 a.m., with interment to follow in the church cemetery.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Units 4 and 1) and the Provincial Palliative Care Centre for their exceptional care and kindness.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Peg’s memory may be made to St. John’s Anglican Church, St. John’s Anglican Church Cemetery, or a charity of one’s choice.
“Her steady presence, hardworking spirit, kindness, and generosity will be remembered by all who knew her.”
