Marie Thompson Obituary

Marie Claire Thompson (O Brien), age 94, of Sherwood, originally Green Meadows, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 28th, with her family by her side.

Marie had a long life; she has seen and experienced more than most. She lived through the Great Depression and WW2, saw the Maple Leafs win the Cup, saw a man walk on the moon, and navigated the timeline from the slower isolated farm life of her childhood to the interconnected fast paced society we all live in today. She was a mother who balanced her family with her teaching career. In her early married years, the home was a bevy of activity, with an open door for neighbours and their kids, and anyone experiencing hard times. In teaching, she touched many lives and, occasionally, pulled the odd ear when a student was out of line. Marie loved socializing and traveling. Even in her later years, she would never say “no” to a request to go on an outing or adventure. She was fiercely independent; even after Dad passed, she lived in her own apartment, asking and requiring little help from family and neighbours; but that help was always there when it was needed. She went all out; right to the end. She was a force; an inspiration. She will be missed by the family and especially the grandkids she loved so much, and by all who knew her.

Marie is survived by her children Anne, Jane (Michael), Sheila (John), Alan (Laurie), and Brian (Janice), and grandchildren Josh (Ron), Duncan, Sean, Andrew, Sarah (Matt), Anne Marie, Molly (Travis), Isabella, and Oliver, and great granddaughter Leni, as well as her sister Lea Hogan (O Brien). Born on March 30, 1930, Marie was the daughter of the late Frank O Brien and Emily O Brien (Kenny). Marie was predeceased by her husband, Johnny, and her siblings Louis, Francis, John, Jerome, Eileen, Martin, Kenneth, Frances, and Wilfred.
