It is with heavy hearts and with appreciation for a life well lived, that the family of Marie Jeanne “Gisèle” O’Hanley (neé Gauthier), wife of the late Dr. J. Hubert O’Hanley, announces her peaceful passing which occurred on Monday, April 29, 2024. Gisèle was born on May 29th, 1928 in Green Valley, Glengarry County, ON to Gilbert and Laurette Gauthier. She is survived by two siblings, Maurice (Marianne), and Martha (Gary, dec.) and pre-deceased by brothers Jean, Levis, and Robert.
Gisèle spent her youth on the family farm, leaving home for St Raphael’s boarding school at 13, then on to Montrèal for Nursing, where she met Hubert “Sock” O’Hanley on a blind date, and the course of her life changed. After time in Montrèal, Boston, Connecticut, and Toronto, they settled back on PEI where, guided by their great faith, Sock started a paediatric practice, and together they raised 8 children: Jerry (Judi), Peter (Lynne), Marie (Stuart), Robert (Jess), Suzanne (Brian), John, their beloved Michelle, and Ghislaine (Brian). Predeceased by daughter-in-law Dawna Noonan.
She leaves behind many to mourn, including sister-in-law Leah O’Hanley and brother-in-law William O’Hanley, her cherished grandchildren: Alec (Molly), Patrick (Caitlin), Patrick-Olivier (Krystel), Katie (Logan), Kendra (John-Ross), Will, Rod, Nicholas, Laura (Joseph), Jack, Kevin, Ruby and Henry and her adored great-grandchildren (Jordan, Braden, Penelope and Elsie).
Mom was the centre of our family life. She cherished her afternoon tea and chats with friends and neighbours Elaine Foster and Millicent Campbell. She loved a good walk with friends, dogs, and family; birdwatching; winters in Florida; a good game of Bridge or Scrabble; hard jigsaws and tricky crosswords; summers at Lakeside, and lipstick. She was much loved by many friends and relatives, including “The Girls”: Libba Mobbs, Roma MacQuarrie, Mary Willoughby and Hilda Rossiter, who never missed a birthday or anniversary.
Special thanks to the staff at Andrews of Stratford and the Palliative care group for their kindness and caring and to all those who visited Mom in her home. She always enjoyed reminiscing about the good old days.
