Martin (Marty) Koughan Obituary

It is with heavy hearts the family of Martin (Marty) Joseph Koughan, age 64, wish to announce his passing on Sunday, October 15, 2023 at his home. Marty is survived by the two brightest lights in his life, his daughters, Celia and Lacey and his former partner Donna (O’Hanley) Koughan who remained his life-long friend. He is also survived by siblings, Barb (Charlie) Mackie, Janet (Pat) Kelly, Larry (Kim) Koughan and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his daughter Kristen, father Lorne, mother May, sister Lorna and brother Frank.

Marty was known by many through his work and sports and will be lovingly remembered for his great passions:

Firstly, his girls, Celia and Lacey. He supported their love of theatre and dance from their first play and dance class and always beamed with pride as they carried those talents into their adult lives.

Next, Marty loved the Bruins and golf. He could not control the Bruins’ fate but he did experience the big bad Bruins and Bobby Orr era of 2 Stanleys in 1970 & 1972 and most recently in 2011. Marty found his passion for golf as a young adult and played competitively ever since. He had so many great golf buddies and truly cherished their friendships over the years.

Marty loved the arts and supported so many events, especially when family was involved. Whether his girls were performing in Charlottetown, Halifax or Toronto, Marty was there. He also followed the music careers of his nephews Max, Josh and Sam as well as the careers of their friends. Marty loved music and could sing along to almost any song.

Marty was an incredibly talented athlete and excelled, not only on the golf course, but also on the baseball field. He was a national silver medalist in 1977 with the Summerside Islanders and named All-Star Short Stop and Home Run Champion for the Canadian title. He was then scouted to attend the Boston Red Sox training camp. Marty’s baseball career brought him many championships and even more life-long friendships.

Marty loved his work as a sales rep. for Commercial Equipment , Fastenal and most recently Lawson Products. He made friends wherever he went and could sell snow to a snowman. He worked on the road for years visiting farms and businesses and took great pride in always looking after his customers. His dedication and friendship earned him the trust and loyalty of his customers, not to mention many awards for top sales. His customers knew they were in good hands.

Marty especially loved his work with HF Stewart & Sons who he considered found his “second family.”  He always spoke so highly of every single employee, how well they treated him and how it was a “treat to be around them”.

Marty’s love, passion and fun-loving personality were so evident to those who knew him. However, he did not widely share his mental health struggles. Those closest to him knew he was on a journey to work through his struggles to become an even better version of himself. Sadly, Marty was not able to complete that journey.

In keeping with Marty’s wishes, there will be no formal visitation or funeral service. A celebration of his life will be held at the PEI Brewing Company, 96 Kensington Road on Friday, November 10, 2023, from 4 – 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association or a charity of choice.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
