Nancy Lorraine (Blackburn) MacKay Obituary

It is with great sadness that the MacKay family announces the passing of our most beloved Mother (Nannie and Great-grandmother) NANCY LORRAINE ANN MacKAY (née Blackburn) on October 15, 2025, Charlottetown, PE surrounded by her loving family.

Nancy, in her 94th year, was predeceased by her husband, Basil (2020), her elder brother (Gerald), an infant granddaughter (Megan) and son-in-law (Peter).

Mom was born during a snowstorm in January of 1932, the only daughter of the late George Sr., (mother, Ismay) and stepmother Ann Blackburn of Halifax.  Nancy was predeceased by her eldest brother Gerald (1968) and her sister-in-law, Josephine (2009). She is survived by her younger brother George Jr. and sister-in-law Shirley Blackburn (Halifax) as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.  She also leaves behind her nine children and their spouses, Patricia (Garth), Dorothy (late Peter), Basil Jr. (Jen), Joanne, Ian (Julie), Barbara (John), Sandra (Wayne), Jacqueline and  Mary Catherine; grandchildren, Stephanie, Lindsay, Sarah, Taylor, Andrew, Daniel, Christopher, Ben, Kaygan, Carter, Jacob and Hilary.; precious great grandsons, Travis, Lincoln, Garrison and Jack.

Mom was delighted to be the first of her immediate family to reach her 90th year milestone.

To dismiss any praise of raising so many children humble Mom often said, “it takes just as much effort to have one child as it does nine”!(?)

Without fail our darling petite Mom with the beautiful smile drove us to school on sunny, rainy and snowy days in a station wagon or Suburban often picking up other kids along the way.

She had a wonderful sense of humour and would just shrug her shoulders and laugh about serving all desserts warm because with a large family there just wasn’t time for desserts to cool.

Mom enjoyed playing bridge, cribbage, knitting, curling, challenging crosswords and reading.

Throughout the years she enjoyed winter trips to FL, fall trips to NH and spending summers at the cottage in Stanhope, PE.

She will be dearly missed by those left behind in the days and years to come. There will be a private family service per Nancy’s wishes.

Sincere thanks to all the wonderful, caring PE Home workers and staff, especially those in Fox Meadow Household.  Mom truly appreciated your kindness.

Donations in memory of Nancy may be made to the charity of your choice.
