Raye Brewster Obituary

With great sadness, the family of Raye Edward Arthur Brewster announces his passing at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown, PEI on July 22nd, 2025, at the age of 85.

Born on August 22, 1939 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Raye grew up in Rockingham, NS, and spent his time scuba diving, practicing judo, and was in the top ranks of Sea Cadets. He graduated from Rockingham Senior High School, and began his career at Maritime Tel & Tel at the age of seventeen. In his later years, he worked for Island Tel so that he could be closer to home and his family. He was a devoted employee, working tirelessly during the weeks so that he could spend time with his family on the weekends.

In 1995, Raye retired and spent many mornings golfing at Stanhope Golf & Country Club, achieving a hole-in-one on Hole #3, and enjoying time at “Mee’s” cottage in Brackley Bay. He was a Mason and a devoted member of the Island Shrine Club for many years. He was also an elder at Spring Park United Church and was, in later years, an active member of Trinity United Church.

Raye is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Jane (Morrison) Brewster, whom he met in a moment straight out of a story book. As she walked out of a restaurant with her mother, Raye – who was with a friend – turned and said, “That’s the girl I’m going to marry someday,” and he was right. Raye and Jane travelled the world, had many cherished lifelong friendships, and adventured through life together.

Raye was the very proud father of Barbara and Jamie Brewster. He cherished their winter family vacations to Florida, and summers camping at Marco Polo Land. He also loved spending time with his granddaughters, Madison and Melissa, his “M&M’s”, even when it entailed being covered in barrettes and clip-on earrings, or getting a fresh coat of nail polish.

Raye always loved a good joke, and will be remembered for always having a smile on his face. He was a dependable, hard-working, and genuinely good man who deeply loved his family.

Survived by his wife, Jane (Morrison) Brewster, children Barbara and Jamie Brewster, sister Nancy (David) Gillespie, grandchildren Madison (Travis) Gale and Melissa Lewis, nieces and nephews Connie Gillespie, Tammy Brewster, Danny Brewster, and many other family members whose lives he touched.

Predeceased by his parents, Laurie and Marjorie (Fader) Brewster, his brother and sister-in-law Laurie and Patricia “Pat” (Gardner) Brewster, and his nephew Michael Gillespie.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Beach Grove Home, as well as the physicians, nurses, and other staff at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for their compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
