It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of Robert Kelly “Steven” Clements of Lower Montague, age 40 years.
Steven left this world surrounded by the love of his family and dear friends, and was lovingly welcomed into the arms of his grandparents, uncles, aunt, and the other special friends who went on before him.
He was, and will always remain, deeply loved.
Steven was born on May 24, 1985, in Montague, PE. He immediately became the apple of his mom’s eye and forever her baby boy, his dad’s pride and joy, and to his sisters, the fun-loving little brother who was always up for anything - especially if it meant getting a laugh.
Steven grew up in Lower Montague with a close group of childhood friends who continued to be best friends right through their university years. The boys spent their winters at the hockey rink and summers at the Brudenell Golf Course, where daily rounds of golf were played - and sometimes twice in one day.
But Steven’s biggest joy was the move to the family cottage each June for the summer. Endless hours were spent with his sisters and cousins swimming, building forts, and enjoying many happy hours out on the family boat, water skiing and tubing. There in “Clements Cove,” he was happiest - close to his grandparents and cousins.
Another highlight of Steven’s childhood was spending time at Government House, where his Poppy resided as Lieutenant Governor.
As Steven grew older, he remained known for his charm, humour, and his ability to connect with people. Beyond his handsome charm and intelligence, he had an old soul with a love of conversation. He felt things deeply and cared deeply for others.
His big heart and desire to help others led to accomplishments he was very proud of - and as are we - including graduating from UPEI with a major in Philosophy, serving as a member of the RCMP Auxiliary Program, and working in the public school system as a substitute teacher.
Steven also had a quick wit and a passion for justice, and spent a whole summer studying to write the law school entrance exam. He was ultimately drawn west for a different adventure.
In his 30s, Steven began to face challenges with mental health. He fought hard through those challenges as best he could, many times over.
He will be remembered for his kindness and protectiveness, and for the quiet ways he showed up for others - whether being there for a friend, sharing a conversation, or offering small acts of care.
We remember Steven for who he was, not for what his struggles took from him. We take comfort in knowing he is now at peace.
Steven is lovingly remembered by his parents, Robert and Winnifred (Creed) Clements; his sisters, Julie (Sean) and Mary (Gabe, and his children, Sophia and Priya); and by many extended family members and close friends.
He was predeceased by his grandparents, Gilbert and Wilma Clements, and Johnnie and Phyllis Creed; his godfather and uncle, John Wilfred Creed; uncles John William Creed and Barry Creed; and aunt Stella Creed.
Services will be held at the Belvedere Funeral Home. Visiting hours will take place Friday, May 8th, from 4-7 p.m., with a funeral service in the funeral home chapel on Saturday, May 9th, at 2 p.m.
