Valerie Murphy Obituary

Valerie “Val” (Hart) Murphy, age 72, of Charlottetown, PEI, passed away peacefully at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown on March 2, 2026, after a brief illness, with her loving daughter and her best friend by her side.

She was born on November 15, 1953, in South Weymouth, Massachusetts, and grew up in Rockland, Massachusetts. Valerie was a devoted mother, daughter, sister, and aunt.

She attended Rockland High School, where she was a member of the Majorette Squad and the Ski Club. She traveled to Austria with her club to ski in the Austrian Alps.

She later worked as a bank teller in Harwichport, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and as a teller supervisor in Brockton, Massachusetts.

Valerie had a sweet nature and was a gentle, loving soul. Kindness emanated from her.

She loved to sew and, after moving to PEI from the Boston area in 1982, she started her own seamstress business.

She enjoyed traveling and visited the Hoover Dam in Arizona with one of her siblings. She was proud to be from Boston and wore her favorite sports team shirts with pride. Valerie was a foodie and loved going out to different restaurants with family and friends. She enjoyed attending church, reading the Bible, and had a very strong faith in God. She had a green thumb and grew beautiful flowers and vegetables. She loved music, taking car rides, and celebrating all the holidays—always dressing up for each occasion. Valerie was very fond of dogs, having grown up with them and owning a few of her own over the years.

She sponsored children through the Save the Children organization for many years.

Valerie loved her daughter, Amanda, who was her pride and joy. She was incredibly proud of her and cherished all the beautiful memories they shared together.

She loved her family and enjoyed chatting on the phone to catch up with them in the States. Over the years, she traveled to visit them and cherished time spent with both immediate and extended family.

Valerie loved all the staff at Whisperwood Villa and considered them family.

Her spirit lives on in those she leaves behind, and she will be deeply missed. She is survived by her daughter, Amanda Smith (Jason) of Dartmouth, NS; her best friend, Melissa Sonier of Stratford, PEI; and her siblings: Donna Shields (Bob Allen) of Rockland, MA; Caryl Hart of Marlborough, MA; Mark Hart (Janet) of Braintree, MA; David Hart (Myra) of Abington, MA; and Shari Hart of Hingham, MA. She was the proud aunt of 11 nieces and nephews.

We invite all who knew Valerie to share their memories and upload photos to her memorial page to celebrate her life and the profound impact she made on all of us. A Celebration of Life will be held in Massachusetts at a later date.
